I would like to fit a pair of bar end mirrors on my 1959 BSA B31, preferably classic style circa 1960's.

Can anyone recommend a good source and also two daft questions.

1.   Are these bar end mirrors any good or are they more cosmetic.

2.  Is there any problem fitting it on the right hand bar where the throttle is situated.

I would be grateful for your comments

Regards

Mick

I have some small round bar end mirrors on my W650.  They are made by Motrax - not particularly classic looking but fairly unobtrusive.  They took a little getting used to but I really like them and feel they provide good visibility.  The ones you see more often on classic bikes are usually bigger and are also pretty effective - you can get them at most autojumbles/classic shows but they are of varying quality.  The effectiveness will also depend a lot on what bars you have fitted, I think.  I believe Halcyon make some decent ones. There is no difficulty in fitting them to the throttle side of the bar, you just have to be careful to trim the rubber grip sufficiently that it does not "catch" on the mirror bar end fitting.

although i have to say i cant be arsed with them when riding in an openface. the wide view makes shoulder checks easy enough & i love the clean look.

You can get similar looking ones most autojumbles for about £10 but I really like these:

You could always try out a cheapo one to see if it is really what you want before splashing out on the quality ones!

You may find that they vibrate so much you can't see anything anyway :) I got some fairly cheap off ebay but I can't remember where, they are OK but occasionally fall off. I think they give better visibility than normal ones. With the latter, I can't adjust them to see decently without my shoulders getting in the way.

had one of the roundheaded Halcyons on red Guzzi..  expensive but quite solid and you could fold it in for getting through gateways etc..

The Halcyon brand ones are the best  in my opinion, had one on my Velo and it didn't vibrate,it stayed put and didn't come loose-the cheap auto jumble ones are crap(from experience I say this)

I had one, can't rememberthe make, on my Commando back in the 80s. I had it on the throttle end and it did vibrate some I would think, but it worked well. Actually better than the stock mirrors I felt as they gave a better view behind vs getting a part view of the shoulder and what was behind imo.

Many thanks for the replies.  I am going to order a Halcyon as it looks the business.

I still have this fear that the mirror will rotate as move the throttle back and forth.

only if its fitted wrong. the bar doesnt move when you twist the throttle after all & the mirror will be attached to the end of the bar. just check the throttle grip doesnt rub on the mirror, not that the mirror will move but it can make the throttle sticky.

They can vibrate loose and the more you tighten the bolt on the handlebar end the worse it gets.....but don't let me put you off:D

I have mixed views no these too! Just binned them off my GT500 because a little tap on the end gave me sticky throttle problems:(. Rear view is good tho,but still prefer high type as fitted to it originally:D

Pooh I had the same problem then my mate told me (and gave me) two builders rawbolts of the correct size to replace the bolts in the mirror ends. Hard to describe but they were the bolts that you plug into walls with metal expanders that expand as you tighten up the bolt. Since I fitted them to my bar end mirror I've had no problems with them and they hold the mirror pretty rigid. The bolts on the mirrors that you buy just have a light alloy expander which doesn't really grip whereas these bolt expanders also have serated edges. IF I can find a spare one in my shed (when I feel better, BLOODY COLD) I'll post a picture of what I mean.

Halcyon one has a decent tapered fitting, the auto jumble ones have a crap tapered fitting that you have to keep tightening as it comes loose rendering it useless within few miles of use-remedy is to make your own tapered fitting if you have a lathe.I have a Halcyon round mirror to flog as it's of no use to me,any offers?Oh forgot to add that as Hooli rightly stated they do not spin with the throttle

stroppy's one used to fall out, i got in the habit of catching it when i lent right! made apexing roundabouts fun :D
was a wornout bit inside the bar that wouldnt grip, mind you the bars had very thin walls so the hole was probably too big.
