i used to do auto jumbles,  here are a few tricks that customers tried on me,

one person walks up, picks up a few items and asks price, not revealing the real item they are interested in, walks away

sends a few mates round to do the sdame, each time saying the price is too high

finally the guy who really wants it turns up and makes a silly offer expecting u to think, well if everyone says its too dear it must be,

2

how much mate,, ive only got a tenner (or watever amount they wish to pay) and show the nice wallet with that amount in it,, they then walk round the corner and re fill the wallet and try it on another victim.

do u know any more?

satll holders also try it on but we will do that another time

I'm a right cheeky git, Ill try anything to get something cheaper, my thought is that it's allways worth a try, if it doesn't work it doesn't work, if it's somthing I really need I will bite the bullet and get it, but if not it's no skin off my nose to go else where.

I thought I was bad until I went buying things with my Grandad! I picked up a useful hint from Doctor Who, who said "Act like you own the place and have every right to be there, and no-one will question you". And it works too. Only other thing I would say is be polite, it really does make a difference.

On the other hand

Didn't take me long for me to realise many years back, that when i asked a dealer," what did this part fit" rather than ask if it fitted a certain bike (cunning eh!), he would look at my jacket and see what marque of bike badge i had on.

Guess what bike the part fitted :D

Mate of mine's Father-in-law was the best haggler I ever met,he'd start with."What's the asking price?"Tenner Mate."What's the selling price?"To You Eight quid."Tell you what,I'll give you a fiver and chance be'in bit"Worked most of the time, from tractors, trucks, furniture, houses he even haggled over his daughters wedding dress on the principle she was only going to wear it once.

I introduced my old mate Stan from the vintage club to haggling at autojumbles but he took it too far at the Banbury run last year when he tried haggling for some Velo bits with a well known Velo "dealer" who snatched the part off him and told him to "f*** off if you won't pay that for it some one else will" Stan backed off gracefully and has since avoided the guy at jumbles

ok heres a couple more

find a box of parts or stall with loads of junk, its works best on thsoe,

pick out the part u want that is maybe worth a bit but u think the stall holder dont know, it does happen mostly if they special in a bike, brits ot japs say but the parts u want r off something else,.,

take out some mega cheap items say 50p to £1 or what you think will be cheap.and pick up em askin the price,  say u will take em and the part u want pick up last, ask for a price an try an knock down , after all u already bought other items,  can get a good discount  this way. if it dont work tuff but u could try the,, ill check if it fits my bike hang on ill be back mode, and try again later nearer the end of the show.

glum faces, this is a great one ,  th weather plays an important part in the show, if its crap less turn up so sales are less, watch the faces on stall holders, notice if they are busy or not, the less they sell, the more the discount , they not even have broken even on the costs depending how far they have come etc. you tend to fing if people are at a stall, others will go over and look in case they miss something, also engage in conversation.

lastly, i always look round the whole show b4 i buy anything no matter what it is, just remember where u saw the item u want and if poss hide it under other items , more than likely there will be another on another stall so its down to price then,

best bargins are last couple of hours b4 show ends, most dont want to pack loads of stuff away and if they have had a real bad week or a mega weekend u can pick up some great deals,  beware ur part may have been sold by then tho so have a brave heart if u fail.
