AF-across flats. A 1/2" Whitworth bolt has a 1/2" thread, and a bigger size across the flats of the head. Hence a 1/2" Whit spanner is much wider than 1/2". A 1/2" AF Spanner is 1/2" wide, and I seem to remember it is used on UNC/UNF threads.

Hence a shifter Greeny! if you carry a big one, nasty plod'll pull you for an offensive weapon. Sensible plod'll know how to use one:D

Well to be fair if I am very uncertain I take adjustable spanner, plugspanner, brass brush, multi screwdriver and a few spare bulbs and a spare plug.
