Ok, so i got my honda ss50 running well again (Hell yeah!) But i was informed by the bike shop owner that it could do with a new carb to run better, i looked on ebay and thought that the honda c50 could have a similar engine to the ss50, so i wondered if this carb would work on my ss50.

If so, could someone help me identify which screw is which, and which fuel (nipple?) is it? the bits that the fuel piping goes on, which one is which ... bit to many witches in that last bit...
Any help greatly appreciated, Malcolm

Hi wicked ewe
Before you buy this I'd check out the postage, there could be a sting in the tail, it might be worth it if its the genuine one for the ped but I'd take a look elsewhwre first there must be zillions of carbs in the uk for this without giving the thai's your pocket money.
Id check the flange fitting first does yours look the same with the offset stud arrangement, if thats wrong you can forget the other details.
regards Rob

Cheers for that trumpet, nah it looks totally different from the standard carb, thats why i asked what all the screws and things were, i know pretty much know mine as well as the back of my hand, as i have a tendency to pull things apart just to see how they work.
I wasnt sure if there were many carbs around, but from your account there must be a fair few, i'll keep my eye out this one should last me till then.
I had previously looked around at sites that sell the orignal carb for the ss50, but they were inexcess of 50 euros that alot of pocket money
(Hehe, wicked ewe )

hi again 'naughty ram'
why not try posting something on the spares section, us old wimps will always try to help the young enthusiast, for the price of a beer or two of course.
Diagnostic time! What is your bike doing that makes you think the carb is US. is it popping on the over run or got flat spots or something equally weird.
I'm thinking little things here like leaky gaskets or hardened o Rings, no air cleaner making it run weak. All would give symptoms of a worn carb. Advanced or retarded timing could make it spit a bit.
I'd try to be thorough setting it up correctly and ensuring all the mating surfaces are flat, (has the flange been distorted by over tightening? Try putting the carb to the engine without gaskets or O rings, can you slide your thinnest feeler gauge between the two when pinched up lightly?
All thoughts from someone that had similar frustrations with an old CD 175 in 1977
good luck R B

... to be honest, i didnt really understand most of that jargon, i'm still a relative newb to the whole bike thing i was just told this by the bike man, i think until i know the bike better, and worked out my gear changes properly , i wont know one pop from another bang (not that it makes any ) ... But i'm getting there

stick with it 'peehs_live'
Its a learning curve we all went through, keep reading and learning, not crappola forums but a proper book on putting engines together. Simple principles like making as honda intended is best when your learning.
keep it rubber side down

I don't think you'll get on with this carb at all for your SS old boy, different style entirely and designed to fit right on top the of the head as I recall, looking at the picture anyway. It would maybe fit, but I think you'd have to reorganise all the inlet stuff totally and it'd look totally wrong on the bike.
