Well I think I've found the rest of the Stinger, I now have two wheels, the tank and the exhausts so I think it's all there. Now I suppose the tricky part starts, the actual fixing.

Have a look at the picture and you'll get an idea of how much of a project this is going to be.

The stinger was one jap bike that I like the look of, I've got a photo of one in the workshop, its metalic green with high level pipes, very nice. Your problem may be getting parts.

Cheers. Do you have any idea what the Matchless is? I mean apart from muddy.

Sam

I know the stinger well, I have one myself and from what I can see and have read your on a mission to nowhere.

Parts are very rare, certain items are impossible to find.

If I was you I would sell what ever is sellable and restore something else.

That Matchless scrambler definitely is not a G50 ( as mentioned in the text) as it is a pushrod engine and the G50 is Over Head  Cam.

I wouldn't claim to be an expert, but the carb looks non/ pre monobloc and I can't see anything else that would argue against it being around mid 1950s origin.

Not much help I know, but maybe someone else on here will be better informed.

Or you could contact the Matchless Owner's Club?

Hi Gregorious,

Welcome, what part of the world are you in?

I too am restoring a stinger, got most of the parts for the rebuild but any NOS or parts in good condition would be welcomed from your box.

I would really like a very good front mudguard (fender) and the tail light chrome dish thingy, a really good original rear wheel or rim and probably a good cylinder head, can't remember left or right.

Anyway I would not expect any items for nothing, I would pay a fair price.

Any chance of some more pics Gregorious?

Ziggy.

Hiya Ziggy..

I'm in Wimborne, Dorset in the sunny UK ...

I'll try and organise some more pics over the next few days but I'm still looking for the old Instamatic print I had of me with the bike in '75.
Just a nutshell story here - when I was 17 I owned this bike, but mechanically was as green as grass. It wasn't running so well one day so in my infinite wisdom I decided to decoke it - everybody knows that decoking a 2T makes it go better... don;t they? - well, with no more than a No.2 Phillips screwdriver and a 10mm open spanner I managed to get down as far as the pistons. One of the rings was gummed into the groove so I tried to prise it out  and predictably failed. Ignorant of such things I left the half ring that wouldn't come out in place in the piston and reassembled it. To my delight it started and ran ok, so all was well in the world. Sadly 2 weeks later (yes - it lasted that long!) the remaining ring half decided to de-groove itself and lunched the bottom end in fine style. With the help of my dad I managed to strip it right down but the crank was scrap and beytond my means to repair, so the whole shooting match was exchanged for 40 fags.
Years later -  2000 actually - I was hankering for another T125 when I came across Alan Betts Scottish Suzuki page. He had a 'lost and found' section and to my joy my old Stinger was listed. Alan put me in touch with the new owner  who was in Portsmouth and who co-incidentally had been trying to sell it but had had no success. We struck a deal with a small Z50 Monkey bike I had plus a bit of cash and I had my old Stinger back!

She's been stitting in various sheds waiting the rebuild I'd promised myself - the wife got a bit p!ssy with me when the bike first came home so it had to wait, but now I have the time to do it justice.
One job I did do a few years go was the rims- The original rims were just about shagged so I managed to find a pair of Kawasaki wheels the right size and  whipped the rims off to re-lace them to the Stingers hubs. Unfortunately the new Hagon spokes I bought have now gone rusty so I'm waiting for a set of chrome spokes to arrive from Thailand to re-re-do the rear wheel.

I've had both fenders re-chromed, as well as the air filter box, chainguard, headlamp mounts and a few other bits. I managed to pick up a pair of show-chromed fork-legs a few weeks ago on Ebay as well so all the shiney bits are ...shiney lol...

My want list includes a proper battery - the one with the terminals at the side, and a decent repro seat cover ...

I'll post more pics as I go along - if anyone's interested..

Hi Greg,

Well the brightwork definately looks good, if it is as good as it looks who did it for you as I will need a number of items re chroming?

What was the Kawasaki you got the rims off and does it have the makers name Takasago stamped on and the rim size then Japan as the stinger does?

Your stinger history regarding the broken ring, I've read that before somewhere unless someone else did the same thing.

So have you got any bits you would like to sell?

I decided I wanted a stinger because they are rare and quirky, I advertised for one to buy and restore but not a basket case, I was offered one that had already been restored, not really what I wanted to do but judging by the photos and the comments the seller made it seemed to good to be true so I bought it unseen except for the photos.

Only weeks later when I familarised myself with the stinger did I realize I had been stung, many parts fitted were off the likes of the AP50, parts were missing, Chinese parts fitted, mechanicaly it was a joke, some of the things the previous owner had done I just laughed at.

Some good points, the frame and engine seem good and the tank is alright. So I have my restoration that I wanted after all but paid a bit too much for it.

Zig ... well, I guess that's my story you've read before, I can't see it happening twice  haha.

The chrome was done by South Coast Chrome here - that lot cost £150 "for cash" and is a really nice job, but as with everything it's only as good as the surface that was being plated - there are one or two little binks but I see them cos I know they're there...  The only 'fault' was probably mine cos they polished the wrong side of the headlamp brackets - for some reason Suzuki made them with the clean side of the fold on the inside and the seam on the outside - the moppers did the clean side understandably, but I guess if I took them back they'd polish out the bobbles on the other side if I asked them nicely...

Anyway - spares, I've got a few bits, probably easier to tell me what you want and if I've got two of something we can sort something out between us. I had to search high and low for a cylinder head - my spare motor only had one, but I bought the first one that came up on ebay.. I suspect it was the same side as the one I already had, but I'll have to check which side it is  and let you know.

The chrome dish thingie - is that the reflector from inside the lamp or the lamp/fender mounting?

I've got a spare rear wheel but the chrome is shagged ...  that said I could probably get it re-done at SCC and re-plate and polish the Hagon spokeset once the others have arrived...

As far as the Kawasaki rims are concerned - I don't know what bike they came off - they were a loose pair at the breakers so I just grabbed them. I've just looked and yes they are stamped Takasago just by the valve hole, I'm afraid I'm not such a purist that I'd have noticed that though ...  I have to say though that the finish isn't brilliant on them - I can still see the finishing marks on the base metal underneath .. shame!

Cheers for now

Greg

Hi Greg,

Well we seem to have seriously hijacked Samuel's thread here.:P

Spares that I have and don't think will need are NOS piston rings 3rd over, good handle bars western type, AP50 horn? Coils, new Chinese rear foot pegs, tail light lens, some cylinder heads that need sorting, rear sprocket hub and cables.

What I want is a good original rear rim to re chrome and then I would also re chrome the dish thingy that the rear lens fits to.

I actually have six cylinder heads, I need two obviously but two have small fins broken off that you can't see when fitted, two with stripped threads and two good ones of the same hand. Maybe I have the one you want?

Regards

Zig.
