Jamie, isn't it pretty much up together, running and low mileage? As your/ Dad's only running road bike, why bother? On the other hand, given the speed at which you work, it shouldn't take you long!

I don't want to discourage you but surely other projects would be more rewarding? Possibly even in a financial sense? Are you not tempted to get into restoring classics as a (hopefully?) profitable hobby?

The Er needs new fork seals and the fork legs cleaning, the swing arm and frame are rusty as hell, the lad before me has done 10k in all weathers over the past 2 years and has never washed it..
And to top it off the bike is kept out side uncoverd in the Rain
All the ally is really corroded, it needs a good strip down ,clean up, repaint and refurb of certain parts, and it should only take a few weeks at the most to do
He hasn't even cleaned the carbs,he said to me "they need doing as its starting to run a bit rough" I said to him that I wasn't supprised.  ! hahaha.
Like he said,it won't pass an mot in the state it's in, but won't take much work to get it sorted.
And it only has a month or so mot so I migth as well get the work done asap, it has 12months tax so if I coulf leave it till the winter it would be better but from what he has said I don't think I will be able to.

I have got to repaint the tank ,seat and fairing on the new bike that I have got for him next week too.

The back wheel  is really "scittish"

Considering your size I wouldn't have thought 'skittishness' would be a problem !
in any event a shorter swinging arm is likely to make the problem worse, not better.

Or did you mean 'Scottish' ?
It feels like the back wheel is jumping over a few inches when cornering, allthough I know it's not REALLY that much at all, maybe a few mm.
Nothing thats to bad to put up with, I do ride off roaders and an old crappy Ariel after all.

it sounds to me like youve a bearing problem eitherin the rear wheel or the swingarm bearings. if the back feels like its hopping about, you may have a bit of play in one or more of the wheel bearings. or else a bearing or spacer missing. does it have a bearing in the cush drive? is it ok, and does it have a spacer in there.

so are the shocks wound up to the max or bearings siezed as suggested above? a solid back end might make it 'skittish'... ?

The swing arm bearings are fine, the shocks just dont move much, Don't know why, one might be a bit stiff or even siezed, need to try another pair on there when I get time.
