I had just written out a load to go with this but I just lost it. I'll fill it in a bit another time.
http://www.photobox.co.uk/album/5006228 Condition of bike (actually shots of my grage now)

Just need to scrape a bit more cash together to send it off to be coated.

Before it came to me it was owned by dad and had spent seven years in the garage, new battery and oil and it started on the second kick.
The chrome is thin and the paint work has seen better days, carb leaked a lot and the revs would never be a constant when hot or cold, bald tyres and all the rubber bits have cracked.
So far I've bought a new carb - couldnt get a monoblock 375 and hitchcocks sugested a Mk1 Concentric (i think) but i decided on the 376 monoblock despite the price being 50quid more - but it was well worth it as it has restored the life of the bike - replaced some cracked lenses and a couple of dodgy switches - fitted an air filter - though it's never had one before.
stripping it down was fairly easy until one of the forks wouldn't come out the casket. but a home made alan key and over 2m of leverage made short work of it.
I was looking at having the chrome done but I just can't afford that.
Ive spent £200 on parts (150 was the carb) and the coating and painting is looking at 350 in total.
and I reckon I've got another 80 to go on replacing other odds and sods.

Looks like a great project.
On the way to being a cracking bike.
Had my first crash on a Crusader, still got a small scar to remind me.
(I was sure I had replied to this thread. Is it a duplicate?)
EDIT, judging from the avatar, it is already a cracking-looking bike.

442 being football related
and GBH being, well...
Im guessing theres a few bikers out there that'd appreciate it.

Nathan,
If you don't want to spend the world on paint and chrome, you've nothing to be ashamed of-- go ahead and ride it!
In the USA there's a new appreciation for "patina" on "barn fresh" bikes and cars. "It's only original once," they say. I've always believed as long as it's fully functional it's good to go. You've done the right thing getting her to go well; just appreciate for what it is. Especially since the marks and "fair wear and tear" were put on by your dad. What do you say?

I think giving it a complete overhaul now and again is good so that It'll be about for others to appreciate and Id like to think I'd pass it on to a child of mine and help him overhaul it again in 25 years time.
All I know about Mechanics is really self taught and Stipping a bike down taught me a lot of things.
If you go with the 'only new once' attitude then why preserve anything or record history?
I might be going over the top but I'm not gonna run it into the ground and start again.

| i think he meant leave it original and keep it that way. if you restore a bike to much then you may as well make a copy. all its history is in the originality and any dents and sacratches it picked up along the way. just get it running and preserve it as it is.

I couldnt bring myself to leave it with the paint work flaking off, Its about taking a bit of pride in the fact it will be in good nick.
Theres some dents and not everything is striaght. Im not too bothered by that because it has been laid down a couple of times.
I would rather "rat it" than just have bad paintwork.

well Im due to pick up the second lot of wet sprayed items in the next couple of days.
Took the head off the other night to find the big end was on its way out so its a complete strip down.
and I've added some pics of the current state of my garage and a couple of powder coating etc.
+ my van ;-)

New parts required:
Cam shaft (£120) - Both Cam Bushes - both Cam followers
Both main bearings (£60)
New con rod (£115) - new shells
Layshaft bush
Gaskets - oilseals - drain plug - Oil filter - clips etc
Crank needs a regrind as its oval.
Clutch basket.

As with anything these days it always costs money
Once done though, youll have a great bike to drive next summer

Yep - would be a false economy to put worn parts back in.
Though since then I have had a bit of a ring around.
Im looking to get the camshaft reprofilled (ithink it was) for around £35
and there is a crank and conrod I'm looking at with a good big end for about £80.
But I am having trouble trying to find a pair of cam followers.
Havent looked into bearings yet and there is a specialist front fork co. near me that might be able to do something with mine for less than the price of new ones.
So its looking a bit brighter.

As far as the bearings go, is there a bearings stockist nearby? If so try them as they might be able to set you up. I took the wheel bearings for my Starfire to the local bearing specialist and got what I needed and quite cheaply as well.
What parts I have had to get came from eBay or a place in Nova Scotia/New Jersey as there are NO BSA parts specialists in this area. So far the most I've spent on a part was about $35/17quid.
Sounds like you're having as much of a good time working on yours as I am mine.
SWMBO doesn't get it, but then again, will they ever?
