just an idea. we all recon we know our bikes best, yet i'll bet that if a bsa expert had a few hours to fiddle with my old sidevalver, he(or she!!)  could probably get it running better or suggest what i might want to do to improve its ride , handling or performance. how about a few small articles with what you might call typical readers rides, and a few marque experts going through them. im not talking rebuilds or any big money alterations, but a few bits of expert fettling from those in the know. and a bit of before and after blurb from the owners saying whether the bikes really are better for the experience.

well yes, and no!! my thought is that as much as i love my bike, im no beesa specialist, and im sure that an expert on beesas could probably twirl the spanners on it for a half hour or so and make a noticable difference, and im pretty sure that thats the same with most readers bikes, the fine tuning that only a specialist in that marque or model would only be able to demonstrate. i just thought it might mke interesting reading as ive seen some belting restorations and yet heard owners comment that this and that were just not quite right, despite the fact that they had built it. i wasnt thinking of trying to teach granny to suck eggs, but i recon that a marque or model specialist could probably improve any bike in their specialist knowlege range with a few simple adjustments.

Possibly you should have tagged "in their sheds' on the end just to make sure:D.

Wonderful idea...BUT

Just suppose you give em your bike and in half an hour they turn the old nag into a Race legend. Wouldn't the guy that just paid the same chap 3 months wages for the same benefits feel rather miffed to find out that all that meticulous fettling was half a drunken hour while being distracted by screaming kids and a playstation...

Also, he/she would open the door to a million BSA owners walking in with a box of bits saying,  "Please sir, do the same for me! I know it might take the whole hour, so I'll get some fish and chips and come back this afternoon".

it is a great idea but POTENTIALLY comercial suicide.

I would think it's great advertising, after all he would be paid for his time by CB issue budget. When the readers see the results of a half hours fettling they may well wan't the same and most would be willing to pay the hourly rate for it.

No, but all the readers, who don't have a copy of "Tuning for Speed" by Phil Irving, but do have more thumbs than hands, will come flocking to his door clutching huge bunches of dirty fivers.

yeah, I like the idea. I just think most specialist make their living by having "special" stuff in their head. If they proclaim publically that they can make a sow's ear into a silk purse for an hours labour, they will have hundreds of herberts with basket cases wanting a quick fix which is not realistic.

Taking a sweet ride and giving it 10% more beans in a couple of hours sounds good in anyones book. I'm just talking about managing expectations. Maybe I tool one too many serious pills...:?
