I fancy doing the banbury run next year, it sounds like a propper hoot. The only bike i have that is old enough is my 1930 BSA sloper, problem is it says on the log book first registered in oct 1930 but when i check out the bsa owners club website the engine and frame numbers point to it being a 31 bike. At that time would next years models be released at the end of the previous year or do i simply have a 1931 bike and thats  that, i have heard they are very strict about this sort of thing

You'd best contact the Banbury people and see what their criteria is exactly. It would be a shame if your sloper was excluded just because it came off the line a couple of months too late.

When you got the frame/engine dated, did they give you an exact date that the machine left the factory or are they just saying that this is a 31 model? If it is a 31 model and left the factory before the end of 30 then it should be eligable as far as I know because the year season ran from the autumn Olympia show.

Cheers Dave, all i have done is to look here

http://www.bsaoc.demon.co.uk/intro.htm

will have to delve a bit deeper, it says on the v5 28/10/30 engine anfd frame numbers are correct for 31 though and they aren't even particularly low numbers ie 992 and 928 but if they go by what it says on the v5 i'm in !

Those sounds like very low numbers to me especially for BSA who were massive back then. Remember too that a lot of sales were made at the beginning of the season because people wanted to get the latest models.

It sounds like you are in with a good chance.

Every manufacturer's model year started at the show, which was around October/ November. Thus if you bought a bike at the 1930 show it would be a 1931 model.

I don't think they check at Banbury anyway, I just filled in the form and sent it. It's the Pioneer Run that is very particular about the age of machines.

Rick is right the 1931 models will have been produced from Oct 1930 so I suspect your log book is correct especially if it is a low engine number. If you want to make sure the VMCC library has all the BSA despatch books back to 1925 so you could look up your bike. Always interesting as it confirms the engine/frame numbers as they left the factory, the despatch date and dealer it went too. I think the BSAOC have copies of the records as well.
