hi,

i'm getting married this saturday and my lovely future wife is letting me name the tables people will sit at after bikes. i would dearly love to find out what the bike my (sadly long since gone) grandfather is sitting on in this picture, so that i can name a table in his honour.

if any one can help i would be eternally grateful!!

thanks in advance

simon

Dunno.
But here's a piece of advice might find useful.
Get married in the morning. Then, if it doesn't work out, you haven't wasted a whole day !

Marriage is the single largest contributory factor in all divorces in this country !

Hi Simon,

The bike is a BSA Sloper, circa 1928 500cc, (courtesy of a very knowledgable mate of mine!)

Good luck on the marriage front, btw.  :D

It's probably best that you don't name a table 'Sloper' !

Yeah, Venom and Viper are probably no-no's as well especially for the M-I-L's table !

And it's almost certainly  best that you forget the Ariel 'Kiddy Fiddler' !
'Uncle' Jonathon won't be pleased to be seated there !

I'm thinking Cagiva's 'Elefant' and 'Raptor' are probably best avoided too !

You could go for Moto Guzzi's 'Gambalunga' (Long Legged) but best not put the M-I-L on that table either - not unless she's REALLY Hot !

Simon, I have to disagree about the BSA Sloper ID; I'm still researching mid-30's models which might match.  The petrol tank is a bit deeper than any Sloper I'm familiar with, and the engine doesn't in fact look to be canted forward.  It does have twin ports, high pipes, and fishtail mufflers, though.  Full electrics would place the machine from ca 1931 - 39.  The logo on the tank has a lozenge shape, which doesn't jibe with the BSA of that era.  I'll keep looking.

Simon, I think I've found your bike; it's a Levis.  The bike in the photo is a twin-port 350cc ohv Model A, ca 1931.  Note the deeper tank than a BSA Sloper, and the lozenge-shaped logo, plus the high pipes with fishtails.  Bingo!  Best of luck on your wedding!  Paul

Why not simply name the tables after manufacturer rather than specific models.

Just as well you aren't naming a table after FB's creation: Table Hodgepodge .......... Now there's a table you could sit your future M in L at.

Good luck with the wedding and take no notice of Gus, he's just a miserable old git competeing with me for the Forum title "Grumpy old git of the year". I been married 41 years this year and wouldn't have changed it for the world. It's been a great roller coaster ride.

I'm not at all miserable !
And I'm not that old either !
I have a very sunny and joyful disposition.
Especially after a few BEERS !
