Hello All

Bit of background as my first post: I'm really a BMW rider,  main bike is an R1150GS but I also have a 1975 R90S which I've undertaken quite a lot of work on.  My dad was a biker, and I've always had a hankering to own a bike which he had owned (not necessarily the exact bike, but the same model).  Which leads me on to the following ...

I'd be very grateful for any help in trying to identify the exact model of BSA shown in the picture. It's one of my dad's early bikes. I've just found the very early negative, and have scanned it in using a flat bed scanner. Judging by the registration, it's c. pre 1936 (when format started to change). Going off that, I've started researching and think I'm getting pretty close with something like a BSA B34-2 perhaps?.  Are there any BSA experts on here who could perhaps add any further insight?

Cheers, CS

Hi,

The AVT reg numbers were issued from Mar 34 to Sep 34. As your pic has the chrome on the tank it should be a B34-2.

Its a nice little bike , we have two of them from 1933 and 1936.

Thanks very much, very grateful.  I tried searching the internet for registration details, but as yet hadn't found anything as specific as the dates you mention.  Is that publically available data from an internet site?

Many thanks again :)

I wondered about this.  If I were to buy and get an old banger of an example back on the road, would it just be too underpowered?  Or with the right mindset would it be fun?  For example, could it maintain 40mph on a run?

The registration dates come from a 1950/51 copy of "Measham Register of Motor Index Letters and Numbers" which lists the dates when each combination of letters were issued from 1903 to 1950.

The B2 had a published top speed of around 60MPH so should be quite happy around  40.

They dont seem under powered to me , mind you I used to ride cyclemotors and still have an unrestored NSU quickly on the road.

Heres the 1936 bike

Not original as it was built by my father out of an incomplete dismantled wreck I had.

That's lovely Dennis.  What should expect to pay for an oily rag example?

Not too sure what the current values are, bought our two many years ago.

Will have to find out what they are fetching as I have too many projects, my part restored 1933 bike may go on Ebay soon to help fund the Excelsior J.A.P

Beautiful bike DM
I'll happily pay you the £35 and 15 shillings:D, plus shipping costs of course.

Bonhams sold one recently for just under £3000.

I'd have to inflate the cost of shipping drastically to make that offer worthwhile FB .:D

If it's any help I can tell you about my '38 B21 which is a very similar BSA 250 but obviously four years younger.

It's very original apart from a couple of rebores, and the current +50 piston is well worn.

It does a shade over 50 on the level and any kind of incline brings it down to say 47. Once the going gets downhill it will touch 55.  This is using an accurately calibrated cycle speedo, rather than the optimistic original speedo.

It's just about fast enough to get around, and great fun on empty country roads. Wouldn't want to be on a motorway on it tho!

 Cheers Clanger

Many thanks for your replies.  Lots of food for thought.  I'll keep an eye out for a cheap example.

Jez P,

If the dismantled bikes are not what you want or are no longer available give me a shout, as I am thinking of selling my 1933 B2. Mostly restored but needs finishing.
