I've often thought of going to places where getting there by bike is impractical or hugely risky, there is a german web site as a central register of Motorcycle rentals throughout Germany.

If someone wants to come over here for a weekend I'm sure it would be easy to find a rentalbike nearby suits your taste.

The main register site is:

http://www.motorradvermietung.net/html/Mieten/mieten.html

If you know the Post Code of where you're going just type it in the PLZ-Suche box and a list of local hire centres will appear. You can also enter a make from the list next to it, virtually all current makes are listed.

Prices are very reasonable example: Triumph Thruxton €66 for 24 hours(10am -10am) incl. 300 km, €249 weekend (Fr.16.00 - Mo.10.00) with free 600km, extra kms €0.25

Many dealerships here do hire bikes so there really should be something for everyone.

you're making it more & more tempting to come out there aren't ya.
I want to visit Cornucopia.. they're based Vahlbruch... then work my way down to Greece.. depends on whether i can get the time off & get the bike ready. if not then i guess i can rent one out there and do the trip.

Next Veterama is 21st April for Bike stuff, if HodgePodge is fully ready I'll be taking her to Ludwigshafen, not that I really need anything but it's usually a good day out. And I want to show off the HodgePodge a bit. Only problem is that Ludwigshafen is the home of BASF Chemicals so the whole town stinks something awful.

The Veterama in October is waaaay bigger and combines cars and bikes and it takes a couple of days to go through it, the April one is Bikes only one week and cars only another.

I will make sure all memory cards are stuffed with images of Veterama, Usuall some good stuff there, generally overpriced but nice to look at.

Year before last a Velocette Venom in race trim was the big talking point, it had been sold on ebay a week earlier and the new owner was trying make a quick €2000 profit. Sold for €7500 on ebay, tried to sell it for €9500. Not really and exceptional example either, major parts were nice enough but the original price was more realistic.

Now I find out about them, after spending a month and we are have back from Germany, and the next time we get there will be after the family has returned to the UK, and when we come over there again it will be on our own bikes.

I have hired bikes in Austria a couple of times in the past from http://www.FOT.at in the Zell am See area, superb service (collection to and from the hotel/ new bikes  etc)and reasonably cheap.

I've always taken my own kit when flying and declared it  as sports equipment , in the past this has meant that it does not become excess baggage.

Only problem was that after hiring  a BMW R1150 GS for two years running it cost me a fortune to go out and buy my own !

The only drawback to the extensive rental network here is, that when you go along to the dealer innocently requesting a test ride, they expect you to pay hourly rental, which they will reimburse if you buy the bike. Takes away a lot of the fun of Saturday dealership touring.
