nah its a disc on four elephants (two male, two female) stood on a turtle (sex unknown).

But what is the turtle standing on???

This was once asked by (I think) Isaak Asimov, and the reply he got, from midwestern fundamentalist bumpkin/freak,  was Gussets post "It's Turtles all the way down !"

Sorry, but it's not Asimov, or Stephen Hawking although both repeated the tale, which involves a little old lady rather than a Bumpkin.
Bertrand Russell or William James appear to be favourites for the origin of the story.

The Smart Arse answer to:
What is the Turtle standing on ?
is simply:
"It's Swimming - It's what Turtles Do !"

which russian was it who called religion 'opium for the masses'? ive got a feeling it was stalin.

From Wikepedia (I love Google searches!):

"Religion is the opiate of the people" is one of the most frequently quoted statements of Karl Marx. It was translated from the German original, "Die Religion ... ist das Opium des Volkes" and is often referred to as "religion is the opiate of the masses." The quote originates from the introduction of his 1843 work Contribution to Critique of Hegel's Philosophy of Right which was subsequently released one year later in Marx's own journal Deutsch-Französische Jahrbücher, a collaboration with Arnold Ruge. The phrase "Tis opium you feed your people" appears in 1797 in Marquis de Sade's text L'Histoire de Juliette. In Brave New World Revisited, Aldous Huxley states that opium is the religion of the people (or rather, soma).

My kids go to a Catholic school and get enough religion. I'd be annoyed if some dolt decided they had to learn creationism. All the mainstream churches seem to be able to cope with the concepts Darwin espoused, why do we have to listen to these fundamentalist nutters?

I got the message DR. The bloke just keeps on showing us how ignorant and unintelligent he is. If he had two brain cells to rub together he wouldn't have to communicate in that kind of language.

Not yet I don't!! but Google searches impress me greatly - one of my bosses was trying to remember the name of "the skinny ginger bloke" who came from Wolverhampton and was on TV programs, messing with snakes.  I put in "Skinny ginger snake bloke" as a search and got the answer! Brilliant!!

Ok , you cry about this to whatever brain you have to rent to fight your battles for you too.

The reason you "planned" to stay out of this thread is because between you and the rest of your neo-conservative psuedo-christian buddies you do not have the brains or knowledge to put up any counterpoint that is based in reality.

The people that push creationism are the worst kind of poeple on the planet, and those who back them like you, are the least intelligent and most ignorant.

No offense taken. Think about how scary it is to live here sometimes, it is like riding in a taxi with no brakes and a retard(Cheney/Bush) at the wheel.

Well what do you know, the far left decides to come out into the open instead of attacking me thru a PM. Hey SuperStupid, that was very courageous of you. Keep ranting. You prove my point.

Now now , gentlemen. Let's all take a deep breath and count to 10.

I have no problem with Creationism as one of a number of religious beliefs - all of which are based on faith, in whatever teachings you follow. I'm just objecting to it being taught as a valid, scientific view of the origins of the world, universe etc.

I keep my religious views to myself, mainly, and don't inflict them on other people - and especially not children.

Teaching children to understand right and wrong, moral and immoral etc. is not the province of any one belief. Nor should one belief system dominate a large part of the world to the exclusion of others, in my opinion. That is what contributes to War, genocide and so many other evils perpetrated in the name of "God." Don't most of God's alleged prophets teach tolerance, forgiveness and understanding?

Incidentally, I think the "turtles" thing comes form a Terry Pratchet, Discworld novel or the introduction to it.

Jess, It has been forwarded with yet a further request for action. Lets keep the thread away from anything "special" and focus on this interesting topic.

I know what I wish the turtle was standing on though...

Det, if you & SS are examples of religious & non-religious americans then i hope you become a religious state!

Awwwwkay, i suppose so!

Here's a dilemma:

Tomorrow we are having special meals, dunno what holiday it is, but I do like the special meals.

On the menu I see there is turtle soup, turtles are very special creatures, I have seen them swimming in mid ocean, wonderful sight to behold.

Now then, having previously tried turtle soup, I know that it is a delicious delcacy. So, do I enjoy the soup, ignoring whatever effect my consumption of it will have on the demand for turtle soup? Or, do I employ my principles and avoid the soup, hoping that my non-consumption, somehow has the reverse effect?

See what difficult choices I must face in life.................

That'll be the day YOUR action is the thing that keeps me out of here.

Loz, your close-minded and unintelligent hand in this forum is almost enough in itself to keep me from ever coming here again.

What IS enough besides that, is the fact that I have much better use for my valuable time.

So long Kunts! Have fun playing with yourselves.
