after an age of thinking the forum had gone belly up, i found out it wasstill running when i logged on at my mates house. but i cant even get onto the openiong page at home. numerous emails to cb staff and their it people seemed to suggest that it was a problem with my isp. i contacted virgin, and they checked it out, and tell me its definately not a problem with my isp or connection, and in their mind, its my ip address that has been barred from the cb forum, as its the only site on the www that i cant get onto. this may be cos i surf in the early hours mostly, and so anyone clearing the bots from the forum may have inadvertantly barred me.
but,
cb say its not a problem at their end, and tell me to call my isp.
virgin tell me its not a problem at their end, and tell me to contact cb. my mates laptop, routed through my wireless connection cant get on here, but back at his house it can. and the bloke who lives next door can get in here too.
so what do i do. i like the mag, but in truth i enjoyed the forum more. and if i cant get in here, then shouldnt i just cancell my subscription? ive drawn a complete blank here, as no one seems interested anymore.
im only on now cos im at my mates house and can get online here.
when i try to log in at home, it just tells me that the site doesnt exist. i can get the cb page, but the forum isnt visible.
what would you do?
of course i wont be able to read your replies, cos when i go back home, i cant get in here.

| Check your mail settings. If your anti spam says that messages from the cb forum are spam, then that can do it. What isp is it?

IE was the cause of me not being able to get into many forums or onto sites that I frequent. I now use Flock ( former Netscape) and I have no problems at all.

| Very odd but I don't understand enough about the Interweb thingy to suggest a suitable technical fix. try what Aelf says.

Seems like a good idea, Jamie.
Have you sent him a PM?
That should get through to alert him, I guess.

right, im (temporarily at least) back this site is definately barring my ip address. my isp say theres nothing at all wrong with my connection, cb folk say im not banned, and as i can log in i guess thats true, but whenever i try to log in, the message i get says that the site has failed to reply to a connection request from the server. its not cookies, or firewall related, its not my anti spam, and ive always got email notifications of replies to my topics, its just more frustrating that i cant read them!! ive binned internet explorer, and im now on firefox, but it makes no difference. and this place is the only one i cant normally access.
so how have i got in? ive used a proxy server which is hiding my ip adress, using this, ive got straight in. actually ive used about a dozen so far, but this is the first ive found that will let me in AND let me post, without me having to subscribe to a pay service. most others will let you in and let you browse, but not post. this server is called http://www.youhide.com, and is disguising my ip addy from the cb server. otherwise i cant get in. this is definately a problem at the cb forum end, as its only my ip addy thats barred. and its a right polaver trying to get in here using the proxy
SORT IT OUT CB!!!!!!!!!!
this is definately at your end, not mine, nor my isp.

Since there are no forum administrators left at CB only moderators, there is apparently bugger all they can do about it.
What some clever bloke at CB needs to do is contact the wowbb software vendors about getting administration rights when the administrator has disappeared.
or as a starting point looking here:
http://www.wowbb.com/admin_guide/
Or send an SOS to:

Sorry Johnr but I have to agree with CB - it's not them !
It's not going to be a problem with your IP address being blocked, for the simple reason that you don't have one !
Every time you log on to t'interweb then Virgin will allocate you a random one that's available - you won't be getting the same one every time.
You obviously DO have a problem, but I'm afraid it's related to your PC and is therefore almost certainly a corrupted cookie.
Either that or your anti-virus/ firewall package has taken a dislike to the forum and is blocking it.

I would have a look at your security settings, first in your browser & firewall. Possibly the content advisor is activated and has some entries in the blocked content which then blocks the site.
Content advior wil block the site if it's activated, as the site is not rated for content, but usually requests a password then grants access, depending on the level set, so probably your firewall.

then why can neither of my daughters pc's connect to the forum either, same ip address, as me, and my mates wireless laptop wont get in here either through my connection, but it works fine at his house.but my next door neighbour, same isp but different ip address can get in. and if it were my pc, then how come when i use a proxy server to disguise my ip address from the cb server, i can get straight in, like i am now?

john, your IP wont change each time you log on to the net. the IP the CB forum (& the rest of the net) is seeing is the IP of your router. so if you leave your router plugged in all the time then its IP will never change.
the thing is IP addresses have leases, typically upto 7 days. so even if you unplug the router & then plug it back in, if its within the lease period then it'll get the same IP back.
it does sound like a CB problem from here, had similar on another forum who were trying to ban spammers. as FB says though CB need someone to accept the admin duties & sort it out.

That will only apply if you are using a wireless router !
I use Virgin, but don't bother using my router, and my IP address is definitely different every time I connect.

Cable Modem anyone ?
My Netgear router, that also came free and gratis just sits, switched off, on the mantlepiece - I got fed up with the connection dropping out, so now I'm just wired straight into the modem via an RJ45 ethernet cable.
I wonder whether Johnr's problems are being caused by a router problem (If he's using one) - perhaps the router's built in firewall is blocking him (if it's got one) ?
Time was, when you bought a wireless router you had to set it up yourself, so could switch off the bits you didn't need. Virgin supply your router ready to go, WEP encrypted and everything, with no information on how to get in and change things, and there's no point in calling their 'helpline' they are worse than useless if you start getting even remotely 'technical'.

nah, im hardwired in. the girls bedroom pc's are wireless, but i found the connection too slow, so im wired in direct. and its not like i changed anything. my computer setup at home is pretty much unchanged for a couple of years now, aside from software updates. and ive been using the cb forum with no problems. then, quite suddenly, i couldnt get in. its not like i changed anything. one day i could get in, and the next day i couldnt. so im still using the proxy(poxy!!) server to get in here, as i cant see any other way to do it!!.

I use Zone alarm firewall (freeware) and there is a setting which masks your IP address without denying you access, that could possibly cure your problem.
Another question or two:
which operating system are yopu using, at home I use mostly XP Pro, and Service pack 3 released a couple of weeks ago caused a lot of grief, one security component had to be removed in order for me to access most web setes.
