Wahoooooooo another Essex girl ;)

Welcome to CB's answer to the Southend Kursal. Good luck finding a good D1. What are you after, one already done or one you have to work on? There are good examples of both out there but the prices are a wee bit high at the moment. Anyway good luck in your quest, if you need any help, just ask.

Hi, in answer to your question, I'm really after a decent one that is on the road, good unrestored condition or restored in the past, i don't want something that is too good to enjoy.

Great Annette ........... Look if I'm "teaching granny to suck eggs" as the old saying goes then ignore the following.

The first obvious thing to look for is starting. Most well tuned/fettled D1's should start from cold within about 3 kicks. Smoke from the exhaust should be minimal, even though it is a 2 stroke, depending on the mix the owner has used. I use synthetic 2 stroke oil at a ratio of 30:1 but others say 25:1, see what the owner says he uses and at what ratio. You will get some but it should be either white or blue. IF there is too much smoke the chances are that the oil seals to the crankcase are going.Same applies if it takes too many kicks to start the engine.

Brakes were never exceptional on D1's, only a 5 inch brake drum however, by pushing the bike then applying the front brake the front should dip and the front wheel should lock up, after all you would be doing less than 1mph. The rear brake should hold you when applied from being able to push the bike along. At least, you'll know that the brake linkages are working though you won't know the depth of the brake shoes.

With the bike running check the lights, front and back and brake. IF it is a battery D1 then they should also work with the engine not running, but when it is running don't forget to see if the light brightens when you rev. That should tell you there is enough power coming out of the mag/dyno especially if it is a Wipac dyno.

I guess I needn't say anything about the frame etc, as they are basically indestructable and I'm sure that as you've ridden before you can spot a problem there. The other points I made apply to Bantams and D1's especially.

Sorry if I've bored you but I mention the previous popints just in case you weren't sure of Bantam weaknesses.

Good luck.
