Hi folks! Just joined so I thought I'd better introduce myself. I'm from Kidderminster; had bikes on and off since a lad, started with CB72 (almost new) progressed via Matchless, VT500, various BMs, to current new Bonnie T100. Wanted to get a classic bike for some time, but as mechanical ability almost nil, decided to start with something I might possibly be able to cope with, so have bought a Bantam D1 plunger (1952). Seems in reasonable nick, but intend to strip it down over the winter and get it properly painted and fettled and put back as near as poss. to the trim it left the factory in. Suspect I'll be non-stop on the forum asking for advice, help, and how to put right the stupid mistakes I've made!

Anyway, all the best. Ride safe!

Welcome Bodger ........ need any help just ask. I'll say what I always say, don't rush into it, take your time, work out what you want to do and take plenty of pictures as you start to strip it down, not only for our benefit as we like pictures in here but also as a reminder to what goes where.

Good luck

Thanks for warm welcome. Attached (hopefully) pic of bike. Tank off as it's being sent for shotblasting so that I can locate leak which appears to be by a seam. Will then be powder coated and painted and set to one side till the rest is done!

Question - my bike has the toolbox on the left side, but ohotos I've seen of 52/53 Bantams seem to show it on the offside. Any idea which is correct?

Mine was on the offside BUT thinking about it, if it is on the nearside you can open it and get what you want out from the kerb, not from the road.Picture on page 38 of Roy Bacon's book BSA Singles restoration shows the toolbox on the offside, as the D1's that were equipped with batteries the battery holder was on the nearside. I guess thats the answer

:?

Thanks, guys. (I don't mind it being a mechanical chicken so long as it doesn't turn out to be a complete turkey!)
