Hi all, have just aquired a complete 1981 honda xl185s which was running well back in `99 when the previous owner last used it. Hope I can call on you guys for help and information to get it back up to showroom condition? incidentally this is my very first project and I am a mechanical virgin!! I think starting with the engine is a good bet and I am changing the oil, spark plug and new fuel. Also buying a new battery.Any thing else I should consider??

Hello and welcome!  Show us a picture and good luck with your project.  I'd check everything if it's been stood that long.  I do like XLs.

Hi and welcome, pleased to meet you. Good luck getting it going again, hopefully the last guy either ran the bike dry or drained the carb before laying the bike up.

well folks since my last posting the engine was running sweet however was unable to rev it for some reason so I spent more time on it today and result.Ticking over and reving sweet. Also the electrics seem to be all in order. Next job is to take a lorra lorra digital pics before I start the dismantling process. I know that the frame needs attention so will have that blasted and resprayed RED to begin with by a local firm who has done work on my daughters cars in the past and I have been happy with.(ANYONE KNOW THE COLOUR CODE BY CHANCE?) Then to  get the wheels re cromed. Also have to get the forks seen to as they are pitted from rust which I have been told is an MOT failure? Has anybody out there got any recommendations/contact numbers for advice on re croming the wheels?

No , it's only a failure if they leak oil or do not function properly.

Thanks for that...... also was reading through the small manual that i was given with the bike and it reads for fuel..."use low-leaded gasoline with an octane number of 91 or higher. If this is not available, leaded regular gasoline can be used"...... which got me thinking(and confused-like I said I`m a mechanical virgin) when these bikes were produced back in the 80`s there wasnot any unleaded soooo..... am I ok to use unleaded in it or must I also use a leaded additive to the unleaded? If the latter what is the additive?

It's ok on unleaded, My TLR200 is fine on it ,(virtualy the same engine as an xl185)
