I seemed to have found my way to the intro page after having already met some of you on another page earlier...
Official introduction now.... Single mum with grown up children who has just bought a 1978 CX500 for its practicality and nostalgia... not for its looks and elegance.
Planning to take it for a run to south of france in october for two or three months for a bit of quality time together... just me and the bike that is...
I havent picked it up yet... next week I hope... and I am probably more excited about my CX500 than anyone has ever been about one of these little darlings before!!!!
whoop whoop
I dont know if it qualifies as being a classic bike or not? what is the definition...?
please dont tell me I dont qualify to be here... I have just started making friends.
thanks n cheers .... jo

Hi Jo, as long as you love your bike, think it's a "classic" and don't criticise other people's choices then you can call your bike a "classic" - as far as I'm concerned.
I think there is a pretty good argument for counting CXs as (fairly recent) classics.
(Although it's never going to be a favourite of mine, personally.)

Heh Jo, when you get to the south of France send me a mail and I'll direct you to a pond into which you can throw your CX!!!!! That's the best thing you can do with them!!

Welcome to phantasia, where Ashley fantasises about nuns while the rest of of us talk about bikes, beer chili and whatever other bollox springs to mind.
CX, Classic, simply due to their indestructability the qualify. Over here a lot of sad people with too much time customise them, often with hilarious results:

The Germans call them Güllepumpen, translates to sewage pump, here's a mascot Bike

Hello and Welcome Jo.

Blech !
Burn it, blame 'Hoodies' and use the insurance money to buy a Moto Guzzi !
What's with all the 'whooping' do you have the cough ?

Welcome Jo. We have exchanged postings in your other part. I think you are doing a great job. Kids grow up and go their own way. Now is the time for you to do what YOU want and good luck to you.

If I were to say no, I am not a Nun, know none and am not a member of the Synod, would you still like cx's? or was that just is case I was a Nun... ?

It'll probably manage the trip just fine.
I seem to recall an article in one of the mags quite recently about a bloke up in Scotland riding a £350 Maggot to Singapore and back.
It's still a Plastic Maggot though !

My CX trike only let me down once and then it only cost me 42p to fix, can't remember what the problem was though - I was just really pleased with the 42p! The only other problem I had with it was it spat its baffles out and got obnoxiously loud . Shame I had to sell it (it was a rigid frame and NOT comfy for thrashing around when pregnant or suitable for carrying the sproglet!)
Might be worth joining the CX owners club - they might advise on worthwhile things to do to it before your big trip?
Get decent European Breakdown cover - Jon rode his Z1100 to Faro, Portugal, a few years ago and had problems with the alternator. Because he didn't really want to get recovery and end his trip early, Carole Nash were trying to get a replacement part to him instead. As it was, he managed without (lots of friendly Belgians everywhere kept offering to recharge the battery for him, enough that he managed to get home still under Z-power!)
